Glenn Schmidt, Vice President for Sustainability, points out that the concept of “technological openness” that BMW has been promoting for years has often been misunderstood. “Many people thought we were sticking to internal combustion engines and not wanting to embrace electric mobility. But that was never the case for BMW,” he says.
As an example, he cites the new BMW iX3, a fully electric X3. “It is an exceptionally attractive car with top-notch technology and sales are doing very well. So it is possible to promote electric vehicles, create growth and innovation while remaining technologically open.” And he points to China, which has seen this model bring success, as an example, since electric cars account for more than half of new vehicles, despite the fact that the country has not banned internal combustion engines.
