Maribor Mayor Detained Following Extensive Police Raids
Milan Balažic, the Mayor of Maribor, was detained following a series of coordinated police operations on Thursday. Forty-two residential and business premises were searched, alongside 20 physical locations, six legal entities, and the Maribor local authority. The investigation, ongoing pre-trial proceedings, centers around suspicions of over 20 corruption-related offenses.
These include allegations of bribery, facilitation of bribery, accepting illicit benefits for unlawful mediation, and providing gifts for similar purposes. Prior to his detention, Mayor Balažic reportedly stated he believed the operation was orchestrated by elements he referred to as the “deep state.” His lawyer has subsequently announced an appeal against the decision.
