Strong winds are complicating firefighting efforts on Korčula, leading to the closure of the state road connecting Korčula and Vela Luka. In response to the escalating fire, all available firefighting resources from Korčula and Pelješac, as well as teams from the Metković to Konavle area, have been deployed to the scene. According to Simović, the Canadian teams are expected to combat the fire through the night, anticipating a prolonged effort.
The suspected cause of the incident is lightning. During the evening from the scene, Simović noted that while air support can assist for approximately one hour, the sustained effort will rely on ground forces. He described the firefighters’ work as an “extremely demanding night.”
The closure of the state road between Korčula and Vela Luka is a direct consequence of the ongoing emergency.
Authorities are managing the situation with significant mobilization of personnel from multiple regions. The continuous effort to control the blaze requires substantial resources and manpower on the ground.
