The Criminal Investigation Department of the Celje Police District initiated pre-trial proceedings in 2025, based on findings released by the Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sport. The Ministry’s notice highlighted concerns regarding multiple business entities operating within the Celje District area, alleging that these entities either improperly secured or attempted to secure compensation payments from the Ministry related to extensive flooding that occurred in August 2023. According to the investigation conducted by the police investigators, representatives from three registered legal entities and two independent entrepreneurs situated in the Savinja Valley region submitted claims detailing damages.
These claims covered losses related to equipment, machinery, inventory, and lost revenue. Collectively, the assessed damage claimed by these parties reportedly exceeded two million euros. Despite the substantial claims filed by the affected businesses, the Ministry issued a ruling that granted the claimants only ten percent of the total amount specified in their respective requests.
The initiation of pre-trial proceedings by the Criminal Investigation Department signals a formal review of the procedures and validity of these compensation claims. The investigation aims to clarify the financial claims made by the businesses concerning the aftermath of the 2023 flooding event. This action underscores the police force’s role in overseeing the financial accountability of recovery efforts within the district.
