A fire in the courthouse created its own fire tornado

Fire clouds have the potential to ascend to heights exceeding ten kilometers. Experts caution that lightning originating from these massive formations can initiate new fires, which may then self-propel, leading to rapid escalation. This specific event is known as a pyrocumulonimbus, or pyroCb.

The occurrence of pyroCb is considered an extremely rare event in Europe, though it is more frequently documented in regions like North America and Australia, typically only appearing over the most intense and extensive fire incidents. According to reports from the French national firefighting association, this phenomenon has never been recorded within France. A pyrocumulonimbus cloud is essentially a thunderstorm cloud formed due to the intense heat generated by a large fire.

The formation of such an electrified, black thunderstorm cloud does not require a specific ambient temperature. Instead, it develops when there is a distinct atmospheric layering: the air near the ground must be hot and dry, while the air situated above must be cooler and more humid. As the superheated air rises, the presence of the fire acts as the ignition source for the cloud structure.

Understanding these atmospheric conditions is critical for predicting the severity and potential spread of related fire hazards.
