Ljubljana Hospital Introduces Minimally Invasive Procedures for Children with Congenital Heart Defects
The Ljubljana University Children’s Hospital has initiated a groundbreaking advancement in pediatric cardiac surgery, commencing the performance of minimally invasive operations for selected congenital heart defects. This innovative approach represents a significant shift in treatment methodology for children born with these conditions. The technique, utilizing a smaller surgical incision, offers several key advantages.
It results in a reduced surgical burden on the patient, facilitating a faster recovery period and minimizing the visibility of scars. This is particularly relevant for appropriately selected children requiring surgical intervention for congenital heart defects. According to the Center for the Treatment of Children with Congenital Heart Defects, approximately 100 to 120 children are annually diagnosed with heart defects in Slovenia.
Many of these children necessitate surgical treatment. Traditionally, these interventions involved a full chest incision. However, the new minimally invasive method allows for access through a substantially smaller opening.
“This represents a crucial step forward in providing optimal care for children with heart defects,” stated Janez Vodiškar, head of the Center. The hospital’s focus remains on improving outcomes for children with these complex heart conditions.
