Severe drought has hit Slovenia: ‘Don’t wash your cars, water your gardens only when necessary’

Prolonged Drought Persists Across Slovenia, Soil Moisture Remains Critically Low

Slovenia has experienced a sustained period of dry weather over the past 30 days, with limited relief from recent precipitation. While some rainfall was recorded during the second and third weeks of the period, it failed to substantially address the existing water deficit. According to the Arso meteorological institute, the extended drought, coupled with below-average overall rainfall, has resulted in a negative water balance within the surface soil layer.

The situation has, in several areas, further deteriorated. As of April 30th, moderate to exceptional drought conditions are being observed across much of the country. Specifically, moderate drought is currently impacting regions including Bovec, the coastal areas, the Mura region, the Lower Sava region, Bela krajina, Kočevje, Dolenjska, and the Savinja region.

Current assessments indicate that between 10 and 30 millimeters of precipitation is needed in these areas to restore typical soil moisture levels. The impact of the drought is only intensifying, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are advised to conserve water resources.
