A 27-year-old man is in hospital following a serious accident in Koper, Slovenia, early Monday morning. The incident began around 2 a.m. near the town’s border with Italy.
Following the initial police response, the driver underwent an alcohol breath test which revealed a blood alcohol content significantly above the legal limit. He refused to sign the resulting record and a second breathalyzer test was subsequently administered, yielding a reading of 0.64 mg/l (1.33%). The driver then left the scene of the initial investigation.
He was observed driving onto the Koper-Isola highway and subsequently collided with the overpass barrier on Ulica 15. May. The impact caused the driver to fall from the overpass onto the street below.
Police officers immediately ordered a further breath test, confirming the initial high alcohol level. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Izola Hospital for treatment. Authorities have impounded the vehicle involved and intend to file an indictment against the driver.
