Bob Dylan’s prolific songwriting output in 1967, encompassing over 100 songs recorded with The Band, has continued to reveal new facets of his creative process. The initial collection of these recordings emerged in 1975 as a cassette release by Columbia Records, with subsequent releases adding further tracks, including the enigmatic “I’m Not There.”
The song gained significant attention in 2007 when it was featured in Todd Haynes’s film, Bob Dylan: 7 Faces. This cinematic inclusion was warmly received by many of Dylan’s fans.
Recently, a draft version of “I’m Not There” was unearthed within the first edition of Allen Ginsberg’s Ankor Wat, a book formerly held by Sally Grossman. Grossman served as Bob Dylan’s first manager and maintained a close friendship with the singer. The discovery of the song’s early draft provides a fresh perspective on Dylan’s songwriting evolution and adds to the ongoing exploration of his extensive and complex body of work.
