An attack took place on the ICE 91 train on July 3rd of last year while the train was traveling from Hamburg to Vienna. Approximately 500 passengers were aboard when a 20-year-old male, identified as Mohamad A., began attacking individuals with a hatchet and a hammer. The incident resulted in several injuries, including one to the train driver.
Court proceedings noted that the absence of fatalities in the attack was considered a coincidence. Mohamad A. had arrived in Austria as a minor refugee in 2021, having previously escaped through Turkey over a three-year period, at which time he was granted refugee status and registered in Vienna.
Austrian media reported that prior to this event, he had been convicted on two separate occasions. These prior convictions included one for inflicting severe physical injury in Salzburg and another for resisting state authorities. Furthermore, German authorities discovered during the investigation that the attacker suffered from schizophrenia, accompanied by paranoia.
