Broke the net for selling counterfeit condoms in Europe

The European Union Agency reported that, in collaboration with national customs authorities, an investigation into seized goods in Romania, Serbia, and Spain revealed that the products originated from a single supplier based in China. Through cooperation with Chinese authorities, the agency successfully identified the exporter responsible for these shipments. According to the agency’s statement, the goods were improperly declared as toys, allegedly to circumvent inspection procedures by national authorities.

The report specifically addressed the issue of condoms, noting that while these items are considered medical devices within the European Union, they are subject to rigorous health and safety standards. The agency emphasized that for any medical device to be legally placed on the market in the European Union, it must possess CE certification. Furthermore, compliance with established standards, such as ISO 4074, is mandatory to verify both the safety and effectiveness of the products.

This indicates a systemic attempt to bypass established regulatory frameworks governing medical supplies. The investigation highlights the cooperation between international authorities to ensure that goods, particularly sensitive items like condoms, meet all requisite standards before entering the European market.
