Ukrainian citizen Serhiy K. accused of sabotage on the North Stream

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed to the French press agency AFP that an individual has been charged in connection with an explosion, though no further details regarding the indictment were released. Meanwhile, the defense attorneys for the accused stated to AFP that the charges relate to a “terrorist attack on civilian energy infrastructure, causing an explosion and destroying buildings.”

According to reports from German media, the accused has been identified as Sergei K., a Ukrainian citizen. He is alleged to have been the leader of a group responsible for conducting a sabotage operation targeting the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022.

This suspect is reportedly the same individual previously arrested in Italy in August of last year before being transferred to Germany in November. Further complicating the investigation, Swedish Coast Guard investigators have suggested that the accused may have served as the skipper of the yacht utilized during the operation. The legal proceedings surrounding the charges remain active, with authorities focusing on the full scope of the alleged sabotage.

The details provided by the defense suggest the prosecution is treating the incident as a major act of terrorism against critical civilian energy resources. The charges underscore ongoing international efforts to attribute responsibility for the damage sustained by the gas pipelines.
