FIFA Faces Scrutiny Over World Cup Ticket Pricing
FIFA is under increasing pressure following criticism regarding the cost of tickets for the 2026 World Cup, hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Fan Association for Supporting European Football (FSE) has characterized the pricing structure as “extortionate and predatory,” and filed a lawsuit against FIFA with the European Commission in March. The controversy escalated last week when FIFA’s website advertised four tickets for the final match on July 19 in New York for over two million dollars (approximately 1.700.000 euros).
FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed the high prices, stating, “If some people sell tickets for two million dollars, it doesn’t mean that the tickets cost two million dollars. It doesn’t mean that anyone will buy them. If they do, I personally bring him hot dogs and drinks.” Infantino attributed the dizzying prices to heightened demand for attending the event.
The lawsuit filed by FSE challenges FIFA’s approach to ticket sales and seeks clarification on the pricing strategy. The situation highlights ongoing concerns about accessibility and affordability within the global football landscape. The role of FIFA in managing tickets remains a focal point of debate, with President Infantino emphasizing the reflection of demand driving the exceptionally high prices.
