55 drowning in heat, Paris bans alcohol, cancellation of events

Sixty-one French departments remain under the highest red alert today due to extreme heat. The escalating temperatures are posing significant health risks, according to French Minister of Sport Marina Ferrari. She reported that 55 fatalities have already occurred due to drowning during the current heat wave.

Minister Ferrari noted that approximately two-thirds of these drownings took place at uncontrolled or unauthorized beaches, expressing concern that the situation may deteriorate if the heat wave persists. In addition to water-related incidents, the impact of the extreme heat is also affecting vulnerable populations. Authorities have confirmed the deaths of three children who succumbed to overheating in vehicles during the heat wave.

In response to the escalating crisis, local measures have been implemented. Since midday in Paris, a temporary ban on the sale of alcohol in public areas has been enforced. This restriction also extends to the sale of alcohol for consumption in vehicles, an effort aimed at mitigating the strain on public health resources during the intense heat.

The combination of high temperatures and related risks underscores the ongoing public health concern across multiple regions.
