Government Announces Review of Public Finances, Commitment to Maintain Current Tax Policy
Ljubljana – The Slovenian government announced today it is initiating a review of public finances, following notification of the current state of the nation’s finances. Minister Gladek stated that the review will focus on identifying potential savings and strategies to reduce public consumption. “At this point, it is too early for definitive assessments,” Gladek explained.
“The next step will involve a detailed examination of individual ministries to determine areas where efficiencies can be achieved.”
Responding to questions about potential impacts on citizens, Minister Gladek affirmed the government’s commitment to its previously stated policy. “Our election promise was not to raise taxes. This was our commitment, and we are following it.
We will primarily focus on how to reduce public spending.”
However, skepticism remains. Economist Grah expressed caution, citing the recent history of Janša-led governments. “The fact is that we have the fourth Janša government.
We have seen what all three Janša governments have left behind,” he noted. “We had a financial crisis in 2008, a period when we were threatened by the troika, and finally the covid period, which we all remember well.”
The Fiscal Council will be consulted as part of the review process. The government’s stated aim is to explore avenues for responsible fiscal management and to reduce overall expenditure.
