Cocaine is the second most commonly used illicit drug in Europe after cannabis. The latest report by the European Drugs Agency (EUDA) is based on the analysis of drug residues in wastewater, which provides insight into actual use patterns among the population, reports Euronews. The highest concentrations of cocaine were detected in the Spanish city of Lleida with an average of 1,405 mg of cocaine per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Belgian Antwerp (1,382), Spanish Granada (1,238), Amsterdam (1,172) and several Belgian cities.
The analysis stands out for its growth rate; the Europe and Motion project analyzed the growth rates among cities that collected at least 500 mg of residues of cocaine per 1,000 inhabitants from wastewater. The largest increase was recorded in Spanish cities Barcelona (+185% or +647 mg) and Lleida (+185% or +647 mg) compared to the previous year.
