Fake call, real voice, empty bill: new era of online scams

Remember when a few weeks ago, many Slovenians massively received fake SMS messages, supposedly sent by the police, informing them that they exceeded the speed limit and had to pay a fine? Later it turned out that this was one of the biggest phishing attacks detected by the Slovenian SI-CERT. What if instead of an SMS message, we received a fake phone call?

Group-IB’s Head of Fraud Protection for Europe, Andrey Parshin, shared a case from his own life. His grandmother received a call in which they informed her that her grandson had gotten into trouble. “We need money, you have to send it as soon as possible so he can get out.

Don’t tell anyone, we can solve this quickly, without any problems,” they told her. Such a scam can happen to almost anyone – here
