The KPK did not take the case of orthopedist Kavčič for further consideration

Investigation Reveals Artificial Waiting List Manipulation at Hospital Department

A recent investigation at a regional hospital department revealed that the former head, Dr. Kavčič, engaged in practices to artificially extend patient waiting lists and redirected patients to a private clinic where he held a controlling interest. The findings, submitted as a formal complaint, prompted the immediate dismissal of Dr.

Kavčič from his position as head of the department and the termination of his employment contract. Dr. Kavčič vehemently denied the accusations, characterizing them as untrue and insulting.

The report’s conclusions were shared with the Ministry of Health and other public health institutions across Slovenia, accompanied by an alert regarding potential conflicts of interest and inappropriate operational practices. The Commission for the Prevention of Corruption (KPK) deemed it necessary to disseminate the information widely. The KPK recommended that public health institutions emulate the approach taken by the General Hospital (GZ) Novo mesto, which proactively investigated and addressed similar concerns.

This model emphasizes transparency and diligent oversight to safeguard patient care and prevent future instances of patients being inappropriately directed to private facilities by department heads.
