Venice Considers Significant Increase in Tourist Fees to Combat Overtourism
Venice is exploring substantial measures to manage the ongoing challenges of overtourism, with Mayor Simone Venturini announcing a potential overhaul of the city’s visitor fees. The existing daily tourist tax, currently set at five euros, is being considered for a dramatic increase, ranging from 30 to 50 euros depending on the date and anticipated length of the visit to Venice. The proposed system, slated for implementation in 2024, would see visitors paying five euros if they book their accommodation at least four days prior to their visit.
All other visitors would be charged ten euros. Upon payment, tourists will receive a QR code for tracking and verification. Enforcement will be strict, with fines of up to 300 euros anticipated for individuals caught without a valid QR code.
This move follows Venice’s pioneering introduction of a visitor’s fee for non-overnight guests in 2024, initially applied on 29 particularly congested dates between April and July. The goal is to regulate visitor numbers and mitigate the strain on the historic city.
