Will Slovenia become part of the Alpine group?

Hungarian Prime Minister Proposes Expansion of Višegrad Group

Budapest, Hungary – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced plans to broaden the scope of the Višegrad Group at an upcoming meeting scheduled for June 23 in Budapest. Orbán intends to invite Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, and Romania to join the existing group of member states. The Višegrad Group, initially established in 1991 by Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, was formed to foster common economic interests, promote free trade, develop transport infrastructure, and facilitate cooperation in the energy sector.

The original group, known as the V4, experienced strained relations following differing viewpoints regarding the war in Ukraine after 2022. Orbán stated the revitalized group aims to strengthen Central Europe and enhance collaborative efforts. He believes an expanded composition will allow for more effective cooperation among its members.

The initiative reflects a desire to re-establish a prominent regional forum. Slovenia is among the nations being considered for inclusion within the updated group. The meeting will focus on solidifying the future direction of this influential group.
