When the body needs water, not alcohol

The Slovenian Association for Chronic Non-communicable Diseases (ZKNB) has issued a warning regarding the consumption of alcohol, particularly in hot weather, due to its detrimental effects on the human body. The association advises that alcohol places additional strain on the body, contributes significantly to dehydration, and elevates the risk of various health complications. While alcohol is frequently presented as an integral part of social gatherings and entertainment, ZKNB cautions that it should not be viewed as a suitable refreshment.

The health implications are supported by recent data. In 2024, Slovenia recorded 842 deaths attributed to alcohol-related causes, with nearly half of those fatalities occurring among individuals under the age of 65. On a broader scale, alcohol is responsible for an estimated 800,000 deaths annually across the European region.

Experts note that environmental factors such as high temperatures, direct sun exposure, physical exertion, and prolonged time in crowded settings all increase the body’s requirement for proper fluid intake. In this context, the consumption of alcohol is inappropriate. The primary concern remains that the perceived necessity of alcohol for socialization masks a genuine health hazard.

The organization stresses that staying properly hydrated through appropriate means is crucial for maintaining health, rather than relying on alcohol.
