Every third baby has this skin problem

Newborns experience significant changes in their skin during the initial weeks of life, and dermatologists emphasize the importance of understanding a prevalent issue: dry, itchy skin. This condition frequently develops into atopic dermatitis if left unaddressed. Dry, itchy skin is a leading reason for pediatricians’ visits in the first months of an infant’s life.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s one of the most common complaints. The Cleveland Clinic reports that approximately one-third of infants experience this issue, often beginning within the first few weeks after birth. Experts note that this skin condition is frequently misidentified as simply “sensitive skin.” However, the persistent dryness and itchiness can quickly escalate.

Recognizing the signs of dry, itchy skin is crucial for early intervention. Parents should consult with a pediatrician to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Addressing this issue promptly can help prevent the progression to more serious conditions like atopic dermatitis.
