Unicef: At least one child killed every week, schools and homes in ruins

UNICEF Reports Rising Child Casualties in West Bank Violence

Geneva – At a press conference held today at the Palais des Nations, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder issued a stark warning regarding the impact of escalating violence in the West Bank on children. Over the period from January 2025 to mid-May 2026, the organization reports a significant and concerning trend. On average, at least one Palestinian child was killed each week, resulting in a total of 70 deaths attributed to the actions of Israeli forces.

Furthermore, approximately 850 children sustained injuries, primarily due to firearm-related incidents. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted a particularly alarming surge in March 2026, recording the highest number of Palestinian injuries resulting from settler attacks in the past two decades. These attacks were characterized by increasing coordination and brutality.

Reports detail instances where children were victims of shootings, stabbings, assaults, and exposure to tear gas and pepper spray. UNICEF emphasized the severity of the situation, highlighting the disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations. The organization continues to monitor the situation closely and advocate for the protection of children affected by the ongoing conflict.

The figures underscore the urgent need to address the safety and well-being of children in the region, with UNICEF documenting the devastating toll. The organization stated that at least one child was killed each week.
