Tragic end to the search: found the body of a five-year-old girl, suspect on the run

Police Investigate Death of Young Girl Near Alice Springs

The Northern Territory Police are investigating the death of Kumanjayi Little Baby, a young girl last seen at an Aboriginal camp near Alice Springs on Saturday evening. Authorities reported discovering the girl’s body on Thursday. Forensic tests are currently underway to formally identify the remains and determine the cause of death.

The investigation is being conducted with particular sensitivity due to the girl’s Aboriginal heritage and the surrounding cultural protocols. Kumanjayi Little Baby’s name was chosen for cultural reasons, and the use of names of deceased persons, along with any playback of images or voices, is recognized as a significant violation of mourning practices within many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Such actions require explicit permission from the families involved.

Six days prior to the girl’s disappearance, Jefferson Lewis was released following his involvement in the abduction. Police have been actively searching the area, including nearby bushes and the desert, as part of their ongoing investigation. The Northern Territory Police have not released further details at this time, pending the completion of forensic analysis.
