Tourism in the vineyards: where wine is not just a drink, but a way of life

Tourist Farms Gain Traction as Key Element of Slovenia’s Tourism

Slovenia is increasingly recognizing the significance of tourist farms as a vital component of its tourism sector. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country currently hosts nearly 1,500 tourist farms offering diverse activities, with a notable increase in numbers since 2022. These establishments encompass a range of offerings, including 789 accommodations, 523 excursion opportunities, 121 wine cellars, and 42 inns.

Slavica Grobelnik, President of the Association of Tourist Farms in Slovenia, highlights the sector’s importance for rural areas. “These farms provide guests with a genuine connection to nature, local people, and traditional food,” she stated. A prominent feature of many of these tourist farms is the production and promotion of local specialties.

Notably, Cviček, a distinctive wine from the Dolenjska region, holds particular significance. Locals view Cviček not simply as a wine, but as a representation of the area’s heritage and traditions. The growing popularity of tourist farms reflects a broader trend in Slovenian tourism, offering visitors authentic experiences rooted in local culture and sustainable practices.

The sector continues to evolve, blending traditional methods with modern approaches to enhance the visitor experience. These establishments are a key driver in supporting rural economies and promoting Slovenia’s unique tourism offerings.
