Tomaž Mihelič: I feel my mother Africa deep inside

Ljubljianan Filmmaker to Donate Book Proceeds to Tanzanian Village

A filmmaker from Ljubljana, Slovenia, is planning to donate all proceeds from the sale of his new book, “Black and White World,” to support children in a Tanzanian village. The project follows a recent video documenting life in the village, created by the filmmaker and his friend. Speaking to the audience, the filmmaker expressed deep connection to the community, stating, “These people, they pull you in, you have to feel the umbilical cord that the whites from Africa cut for centuries and centuries, but apparently they couldn’t cut everything, because I feel that mother Africa deep inside me.”

The filmmaker has visited the village multiple times and intends to use the funds to provide essential resources, including education, healthcare, and access to clean drinking water.

Co-author Klavdija Simler, who illustrated the book, emphasized the importance of these resources, noting, “What is self-evident for many of us, not everyone has it.”

Simler, along with the book’s illustrator, is particularly moved by the experience. The project aims to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by communities in Africa and to support the well-being of the village’s children. The filmmaker hopes to continue his engagement with the community, allowing him to continue to feel the connection to Africa and its people.
