The United States is withdrawing troops from Iraq, then already left

The Iraqi insurgents declared over the weekend they had secured an accord with the Americans, outlining the complete withdrawal of all American troops from Iraqi government-controlled territories. This agreement was subsequently verified by the Iraqi government on Sunday. Specifically, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense confirmed the departure of the final group of American military advisors from the Al Asad airbase, located in the Anbar province of western Iraq.

American forces had maintained a presence at this base for more than twenty years. CNN reports that this significant development marks the end of a long-standing military operation. Previously, the US forces at Al Asad had been repeatedly targeted by Iranian and Iraqi insurgents throughout the years.

Iraq announced last Sunday that its armed forces possessed the necessary capabilities across all branches to ensure the nation’s security. Looking ahead, the Iraqi government stated that continued cooperation with the American troops would be maintained. The Iraqi government emphasized its confidence in its own security forces and their ability to safeguard the country.

This withdrawal represents a key shift in the ongoing security landscape within Iraq.
