In 1908, an incident occurred at St. Charles pier involving the discovery of human remains. An individual named Lacovič arrived at the pier early in the morning with the intent to fish, as the area was known for a high population of squid during that time of year.
Upon observing the marine life in the sea, he borrowed a harpoon in an effort to catch the squid. However, he noted that the squid had already departed the immediate area. During his search, Lacovič observed a large white barrel near the water’s edge.
Initially, he assumed the barrel was simply discarded equipment belonging to passing fishing vessels. After successfully retrieving the object from the water, he discovered that the barrel was covered in blood. Inside, it contained what was identified as a wrapped human head.
Lacovič reported this unsettling find in the newspaper Il Piccolo. Local authorities responded promptly to the discovery. An investigating judge arrived on the scene and consulted with the expert, Dr.
Xydias, who conducted the initial examinations. Following the inspection, Dr. Xydias concluded that the barrel indeed contained a human head wrapped in blood.
