The steps in Kenya changed the idea of the extinct human ancestor

Paranthropus boisei, a hominin species that inhabited eastern Africa between approximately 2.3 and 1.2 million years ago, has long been characterized by its robust features, including large teeth and powerful jaw musculature, earning it the moniker “Nutcracker Man.” Historically, scientists have viewed it as a relatively small relative within the human lineage. However, a recent discovery of 21 fossil footprints at the Koobi Fora area, near Lake Turkana in Kenya, presents a revised understanding of the species’ physical stature. Based on an analysis of the length and width of these prints, researchers have revised estimates regarding the species’ size.

The new data suggests that adult males of P. boisei could have reached a height of up to 1.8 meters and weighed approximately 75 kilograms. This contrasts significantly with previous estimates, which placed the species at about 131 centimeters in height and 49 kilograms.

The fossilized tracks, which date back approximately 1.4 million years, also provide insight into the group dynamics. The pattern of the steps indicates that at least eight individuals of P. boisei traversed the area concurrently.

Researchers hypothesize that this suggests a passage of at least eight members of the species across the region adjacent to the lake. This new physical evidence challenges previous assumptions about the size and group movement of this early human relative.
