Spanish MP Voices Criticism of European Response to Gaza and Iran Conflict
During a session of the European Parliament on Wednesday, Spanish Member of Parliament Irene Montero expressed strong dissatisfaction with the European Union’s response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the broader situation in the Middle East. Montero, who is slated to join the European Parliament in 2024 and has previously been a vocal critic of Israeli actions in Gaza, made a pointed statement during the session. The disruption occurred as the parliament was marking former U.S.
President Donald Trump’s birthday with a celebratory song. Montero questioned the appropriateness of the celebration, stating, “What does Europe celebrate? Can we celebrate that we have stopped genocide, that we have stopped the illegal war of the US and Israel against Iran, that we have broken ties with Israel, that we have stopped the occupation in Lebanon?”
Addressing the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, Montero asked, “What do you celebrate, Mrs.
Kallas? Do you celebrate perhaps that you have celebrated the birth of a child?”
Montero’s comments drew attention and sparked debate within the parliament. The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the conflict and differing perspectives on the EU’s role in international affairs.
The Spanish MP sang a portion of the birthday song before continuing her remarks.
