New York Opens Modified Tennis Center for World Championship
New York – The state of New York has invested $20 million to provide public viewing opportunities for the upcoming World Championship, prioritizing access over stadium attendance. On Thursday, Governor Kathy Hochul, alongside representatives from the Mayor and City Councils, officially opened the tennis center in Flushing, New York, to observe the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. The match, held in Mexico’s capital, marked the beginning of the championship event.
The facility, previously a tennis center, is undergoing a transformation. Plans include painting the building football-colored by July, and a large football graphic will be installed at the complex entrance. Governor Hochul stated, “New Yorkers are ready to welcome fans from all over the world for the World Championship and we have made sure that everyone who calls this city home will be part of this historic event.” She also expressed enthusiasm for the New York Knicks basketball team.
This initiative aims to ensure broad community engagement with the World Championship, offering a public viewing space for spectators throughout the event. The tennis facility’s conversion reflects a broader effort to adapt the space for a global audience.
