“Blue-green algae supply the sea with oxygen, but when they multiply excessively, they release toxins. Dinoflagellates and bacteria in humans with sensitive skin then cause irritation. Experts therefore advise all bathers to avoid entering the water until bacteriologists sample and confirm its safety,” said Sabaheta Hadžiavdić, a nature conservation expert.
Toxins, on the other hand, very quickly fill the tissues of cultivated commercial shellfish. People who consume such infected shellfish then indirectly endanger their health, warns Hadžiavdićeva. Intense bloom can cause mass deaths of commercial and non-commercial fish species and disrupt the marine ecosystem.
Nature conservationists usually only record blooms at the peak of the bathing season. Climate change and rapid warming are causing blooms to occur much earlier.
