Borovniški Viaduct Reconstructed Using AI
The Borovniški viaduct, a significant engineering achievement of the 19th century, now stands as a solitary pillar in Slovenia. Dušan Briški has created a visual reconstruction of the viaduct, utilizing artificial intelligence techniques developed between 1850 and 1941. The project, showcased on his YouTube channel Vedomec Vision (Pogled Vedomca), aims to address the difficulty people experience in visualizing the structure’s original scale and impact.
Briški explained, “When you look at this one remaining pillar or the faded black-and-white photographs, it’s challenging to fully grasp the true grandeur of this object and its former prominence in the landscape.” He sought to bridge this visual gap and connect the viaduct’s technical heritage with contemporary understanding. The AI-generated reconstruction depicts the viaduct as it once stood, offering a representation of its original design. While the project currently exists as a video, Briški envisions integrating the technology with virtual reality (VR) to allow viewers to experience the viaduct in a fully immersive way.
This would enable users to virtually traverse the structure and appreciate its scale in 3D. The project highlights the potential of utilizing historical data to preserve and understand significant engineering achievements.
