The more expensive diesel for foreigners in Slovakia is not in line with EU legislation

The Slovak government recently implemented restrictions on diesel fuel sales, driven by the nation’s escalating energy crisis exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Iran. Customers are now limited to filling their vehicles’ tanks, and the purchase of more than 10 liters of fuel into containers is strictly prohibited. AFP reports this decisive action.

Furthermore, vehicles bearing foreign license plates will face higher prices at Slovak petrol stations. These prices are calculated as the average of current rates in neighboring countries – Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland. This ensures a more equitable pricing structure.

The European Commission has voiced strong concerns regarding this measure, deeming it discriminatory and inconsistent with EU legislation. Ricardo Cardoso, a press representative for the Commission, stated at a press conference today, “Although we acknowledge the necessity to support citizens, particularly during this challenging period, these measures are discriminatory and run contrary to EU legislation.”

The Commission emphasizes the importance of fair access to fuel and believes this approach creates an uneven playing field. They maintain that the increased cost of fuel for foreign vehicles is unacceptable.
