The house was seized from the cultured goalkeeper because of his connections with the king of drugs

Rene Higuita, a former professional soccer player known for his acrobatic defensive skills, purchased a house in the upscale Medellín area in 1992. According to reports from AFP, the signature used for the property’s purchase was allegedly forged to obscure the source of the funds. The goalkeeper reportedly came into possession of the residence following several transfers, a year prior to the death of drug lord Pablo Escobar.

A subsequent 12-year investigation revealed that the property was initially acquired by cartel members, brothers William and Gerardo Moncada. These brothers were later killed in prison at Escobar’s direction. Regarding the connection, Higuita stated on Blu Radio in Bogotá that he considered the timing a mere coincidence, asserting that he views himself as a victim of the surrounding events.

For context, AFP notes that Higuita played against the Yugoslavian national team during the 1990 World Cup in Italy. The acquisition of the house remains a subject of investigation concerning the financial origins of the funds.
