The decisive three seconds that could prevent a tragedy in Ljubljana

Following the accident in Ljubljana, the bus driver killed a minor student, Andrej Cvar, the safety assessor at the Transportation Safety Agency (AVP), said. He pointed out that three seconds could have prevented the tragedy. The current traffic lights in most intersections in Ljubljana, including the one where the accident occurred, are set to turn green three seconds before pedestrian lights turn green.

Cvar is convinced that this is what led to the tragic situation. When the bus’s green light turned on, the pedestrian crossing was empty, so the driver accelerated and began turning right. He moved just enough to have the girl, who had stepped onto the pedestrian crossing in accordance with all the rules, in the wrong place.
