Bear Remains at Large Following Fukushima Plant Incursion
A bear entered the Fukushima steel plant on Tuesday evening, resulting in an attack on four workers before fleeing to a nearby electronics plant. Authorities initiated efforts to contain the animal, initially attempting immobilization with tranquilizers and deploying food traps. However, the bear successfully consumed fruit and honey traps without triggering the mechanisms.
On Wednesday evening, the plant’s lights were extinguished to facilitate a more targeted search. Despite this, the bear was observed opening a window and subsequently escaped. Prior to this, reports indicate the animal used its paws to manipulate a water tap, drinking from it.
Following these events, authorities authorized the use of lethal force against the bear, but have opted to continue pursuit due to the presence of flammable materials within the plant. A search operation utilizing drones was implemented, and local schools adjusted their schedules to accommodate the ongoing situation. The search for the bear continued throughout yesterday.
The BBC reports that the authorities are prioritizing the safety of the surrounding community while maintaining efforts to safely capture the animal.
