European Bathing Water Quality Remains High, EEA Report Finds
A recent assessment of bathing water quality across the European Economic Area (EEA) revealed sustained high standards for coastal waters. The EEA evaluated over 22,200 bathing water sites encompassing 27 EU member states, Albania, and Switzerland. The report highlighted that 85 percent of monitored sites achieved the highest quality standards last year, demonstrating a strong commitment to water quality.
Furthermore, 96 percent of EU bathing water sites met the minimum quality standards established for recreational use. Only 1.5 percent of the assessed bathing waters were classified as poor quality. The EEA noted that the overall quality of bathing water across Europe has remained stable compared to the previous year.
Several countries demonstrated particularly strong performance, with Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Greece leading the way with 95 percent or greater of bathing waters meeting excellent quality criteria. Analysis indicated that coastal bathing water quality generally exceeded that of inland waters within the surveyed areas. This ongoing monitoring underscores the continued efforts to maintain high standards for European bathing water quality.
