In the UK, diagnoses of this brain infection are rare, occurring only among a small number of people each year. The infection is caused by the larvae of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. According to reports from the BBC, the illness was contracted by Lowry during a three-month trip to India in 2007.
During that trip, she had intended to avoid meat to help prevent food poisoning. However, her doctor suspects that she inadvertently consumed pork containing microscopic tapeworm eggs.
