Slovenian Parliament Enters Second Round of Government Formation Process

The Slovenian National Assembly (DZ) convened on Tuesday for an extraordinary session to address the President of the Republic, Nataša Pirc Musar’s, decision not to propose a candidate for the mandate of the DZ following the inconclusive first round of voting. President Pirc Musar stated that, after consultations with the parliamentary groups, a clear majority support for any individual was not identified. Consequently, she has determined not to advance a candidate for the leadership of the minority government.

The second, 14-day round of deliberations officially commenced today, allowing parliamentary groups – or at least ten deputies – to nominate their own candidates in addition to the President’s authority. This phase follows the initial unsuccessful attempt to secure a single candidate. Notably, the candidacy of Janez Janša, President of the Slovenian Democratic Union (SDS), is anticipated to be a central element of the second round.

Janša is pursuing the formation of a fourth coalition government following recent amendments to the government law. The SDS, often described as a “three-headed dog” due to its coalition ambitions, remains a key starting point for potential coalition agreements within the prospective government. The DZ will now proceed with the process of evaluating candidate proposals during the designated timeframe.
