Will we have to drive slower and (more) work from home?

The Climate Council proposes several measures to address the ongoing climate crisis, including targeted subsidies for smaller electric vehicles and restrictions on government business flights. The Council also suggests eliminating subsidies that increase air travel capacity. One of the more significant proposals involves lowering the speed limit on motorways.

According to Professor Griša Močnik, a member of the Climate Council, this is a straightforward and effective solution. “Reducing the speed from 120 kilometers per hour to 100 kilometers per hour results in a 44 percent decrease in resistance,” Močnik explained. “This, in turn, reduces energy consumption, demonstrating that even small changes in travel speed can have a substantial impact on fuel usage.”

Močnik, also the dean of the Faculty of Science, emphasized the potential for significant reductions in fuel consumption through this simple adjustment.

The Council’s recommendations focus on achievable changes that could substantially mitigate the effects of increased travel on energy resources.
