France Grapples with Multiple Heat-Related Deaths as Temperatures Soar
France is facing a critical situation as rising temperatures trigger multiple fatalities and widespread disruptions across the country. Preliminary reports indicate at least three elderly individuals have died in the Bordeaux area due to health complications related to the extreme heat. Additionally, two children, aged two and four, were found unconscious within a family vehicle in the south-east of France, and are confirmed dead.
Authorities are also reporting a minimum of 13 drowning deaths linked to the heat, further compounding the crisis. Meteo-France forecasts Paris will experience its highest recorded temperature in June, with preliminary data suggesting a peak of 38.4 degrees Celsius. Responding to the escalating emergency, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has convened a government crisis meeting.
Over 1,350 schools across France have been temporarily closed to protect students and staff. The severity of the situation is extending beyond France, with Italy declaring the highest alert level for twelve cities and a rise in fatalities due to heat in Germany. The situation is becoming increasingly serious, and the impact is also felt across Europe.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the casualties and the contributing factors.
