National Assembly Approves Dismissal of Referendum Proposal on Emergency Law
The President of the National Assembly, Zoran Stevanović, today adopted a decision dismissing a proposal for a legislative referendum concerning the “Law on Emergency Measures for the Development of Slovenia.” The decision followed no debate and was linked to a proposed amendment to the labor law, specifically eliminating the requirement for employers to deduct union dues directly from employee salaries. The move has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. Nataša Avšič Bogovič, leader of the Freedom MPs (SDS), argued that the expedited consideration process was wholly unsuitable.
She stated that the SDS and NSi MPs submitted the proposal in response to significant opposition from trade unions regarding the emergency law. According to Avšič Bogovič, over 47,000 signatures were gathered in support of an initiative to trigger a legislative referendum. The opposition contends that the rapid process does not adequately address concerns surrounding the new law.
The debate centers on the proposed amendment to the labor law and its potential impact on union representation. This proposal highlights a significant point of contention within the National Assembly regarding the future of labor regulations.
