Potential toxic cyanobacteria detected in Bohinjsko jezero

Analysis results regarding the cyanobacteria situation at Lake Bohinj were published today on the Ciano SLO Facebook page. Sampling was conducted on July 1st. Investigators observed floating mats approximately 10 meters from the shoreline.

These formations were noted to resemble those observed in the previous year but were smaller, measuring around four centimeters in size. Microscopic examination of a sample taken from the floating mat detected the presence of potential toxic cyanobacteria. Further molecular analysis confirmed the existence of genes responsible for the synthesis of anatoxins.

The report specifies that the source of these organisms appears to be benthic cyanobacteria, which colonize rocks or other submerged surfaces before detaching to form surface mats. The findings indicate that the toxins identified are the same type that were present last year, correlating with previous instances of poisoning. This information provides an update on the current ecological status of the lake.

The identification of these genes suggests a continued presence of toxic biological activity within the water column. The data highlights the ongoing monitoring of cyanobacteria blooms and the physical characteristics of the observed mats, which remain a point of scientific focus for local environmental authorities.
