Vladimir Petković has reportedly extended his coaching contract with the Algerian federation through July 2028, following an agreement reached in Sarajevo. This development follows an earlier report that the Algerian federation had terminated the contract with the Swiss expert, who has been leading the national team since 2024. Petković’s tenure with the national side has been marked by significant success.
Under his guidance, Algeria achieved World Cup qualification after a twelve-year absence. During the World Cup tournament, the team secured third place in their group, which included Argentina, Austria, and Jordan. Furthermore, they advanced to the last sixteen, defeating Switzerland with a 2-0 victory.
Petković brings extensive experience to his role in Algeria. Prior to his time with the national team, he coached Switzerland from 2014 to 2021. Beyond international duties, his career has spanned various club levels, including stints with Young Boys, Lugano, and Sion in Switzerland, as well as with Samsunspor in Turkey, Lazio in Italy, and Bordeaux in France.
Currently, Petković remains active in professional football, having secured another season with Schalke. The extension of his contract solidifies his commitment to the Algerian program, cementing a period of stability following notable international achievements for the Algerian national team.
