Support Grows for Ljubljana Referendum as Signature Collection Accelerates
Ljubljana – The initiative seeking a municipal referendum is reporting a significant increase in support, with representatives stating that the collection of signatures is proceeding at an accelerated pace. More prominent individuals and civil society organizations are joining the effort, bolstered by promotional activity on social media networks. Organizers anticipate gathering at least 11,500 certified signatures by May 28, the deadline for the signature collection, which they believe will meet the threshold required for a municipal referendum.
Borut Hočevar, a representative of the initiative, emphasized that a successful outcome would send a clear message to the Ljubljana municipality regarding persistent issues. “We aim to demonstrate that parking problems and other challenges require a fundamentally different approach than previously implemented,” Hočevar stated. Mayor Zoran Janković assessed the potential outcome, suggesting that a favorable result for the referendum could be interpreted as a vote of no confidence.
However, initiative representatives firmly deny this interpretation. They maintain that the referendum is focused on addressing systemic problems within the municipality, not a personal challenge directed at the mayor. The initiative continues to actively pursue the collection of signatures, aiming to secure sufficient support for the upcoming referendum.
