Emmanuel Macron has championed a significant legislative reform involving a phased ban on the creation of new social media accounts for young people. The proposed regulation outlines a two-stage approach to restrict access. Initially, starting September 1st of this year, the law will prohibit minors under the age of 15 from opening new accounts on social networking platforms. The restrictions will become more comprehensive by January 2027, at which point platforms will be required to close the existing accounts of users who fall under the specified age bracket.
Companies that operate social networks will bear the responsibility for enforcing these new regulations. During the process, French Minister for Digital Affairs, Anne Le Hénanff, confirmed that the proposed timeline is achievable, citing the readiness of existing age verification technologies.
