New biometric registries: National Assembly approved tighter border control

Slovenian Parliament Approves Expanded Migrant Control Law Following Increased Border Crossings

Ljubljana – Slovenia’s parliament today adopted a new law aimed at bolstering border control measures following a significant increase in irregular border crossings throughout the year. Data indicates a 40% rise in such crossings compared to the same period in 2023, prompting a temporary suspension of internal border controls by the government. The legislation, enacted in accordance with a European directive, expands the scope of individuals subject to migration control.

It now includes individuals apprehended during irregular border crossings, as well as those identified as illegally staying within the country. Denis Zobarič, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, explained that the law broadens the categories of individuals monitored, encompassing a wider range of migration-related circumstances. A key component of the new law involves expanding the data collected within the European Eurodac register.

This will encompass not only fingerprints but also facial images and documentation, including copies of travel documents. The implementation of mandatory data collection is intended to enhance the effectiveness of border control efforts. The government’s response reflects ongoing challenges related to migration flows and the need for strengthened mechanisms to manage border crossings throughout the year.
