Mass Arrests of MS-13 Members in El Salvador Following Violent Events
El Salvador authorities have arrested nearly 486 suspected members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang. The arrests are linked to an ongoing investigation into violence that occurred in March 2022, resulting in the deaths of 87 individuals across the country over a single weekend. The events prompted President Nayib Bukele to declare a state of emergency and expand arrest powers.
The operation, focused on salvadorju, targets individuals suspected of involvement in criminal activity dating back to 2012. Many of the alleged offenses occurred between 2012 and 2022. The United Nations has expressed concerns regarding the scale of the mass trials, citing potential infringements on the rights of the accused and the presumption of innocence.
However, prosecutors maintain they possess sufficient evidence to secure maximum sentences against those involved in the zaporniki operations. The investigation continues as authorities seek to dismantle the MS-13’s presence within the country.
