Tidal activity in Stari Grad on Hvar recently displayed significant and rapid fluctuations, drawing attention from local residents and tourists. According to reports, the tide began to rise around 11 p.m., with the sea level increasing by more than 30 centimeters at the base of the coast. Witness accounts described the initial period when the water level visibly rose, reaching heights that submerged some areas to knee depth.
Tourists present at the time noted the dramatic nature of the incoming tide. Then, the situation changed abruptly. The sea level experienced a substantial drop, receding by approximately 60 centimeters below its normal baseline.
This rapid ebb left several boats stranded on the seabed. The dramatic transition from high tide to low tide provided a striking display of coastal dynamics. Local resident Danas described the event as “very interesting,” observing the full cycle of the water receding until the vessels rested fully on the bottom.
Meteorological sources suggest that such pronounced shifts are typically correlated with sudden changes in local weather conditions. The recorded measurements highlight the extreme variance in water levels, with changes measured in tens of centimeters.
